Pamela Goddard & "Kitchen Chair"
Pamela Goddard: Raised in the boom of the
1960’s folk revival, Pamela Goddard sang with her father at home, with
the church choir, and traveled up and down the Hudson River soaking up
music at the early Clearwater Picnics. The singers she heard at these
Picnics (now known as the annual Hudson River Revival Festival) have
long since melded into her musical personality.
Pamela emigrated “upstate” in 1989, moving to the
Finger Lakes region of Central New York. Working full-time as the
Curator of Education and Co-Director of a local history museum, in 2000,
after nearly twenty years as a museum educator, Pamela decided to focus
on her song and dance interests, and is now a free-lance writer. Pamela
has performed from Staten Island to Rochester, NY, and from Penobscot
Bay in Maine to Ontario. She blends an intimacy with the music and
careful historical scholarship with light humor, creating an easygoing
relationship with her audience.

Chicago (1920)

early as the 1960’s)

February
18:
Harps on the Susquehanna
with Meredith Kohn Bocek!
First
Presbyterian Church,
3:00-4:30
The Harps on the Susquehanna harp ensemble has been a
dream of Meredith Kohn Bocek for several years. If the sound of one harp
is lovely… then, the sound of many harps is indeed music of the heavenly
spheres. This ensemble came together over a year ago and is made up of
area harpists. Each member adds spiritual and musical dimensions to the
group. It is our goal to touch and bring joy to people's lives. The
ensemble will perform tunes from the British Isles as well as pieces by
classical composers.
Ruth Thomson is the newest member of the
ensemble. Ruth specializes in Celtic music for the harp and plays at art
events, folk-type weddings, or parties. She has played a broad range of
folk music and added harp effects for the Ti-Ahwaga Community Players
and Endicott Performing Arts Center productions of “The Fantastiks”.
Melissa Collins is a certified Therapeutic
Harp Practitioner with the International Harp Therapy Program and uses
music for healing and restoration in nursing homes, hospitals and
private settings. She is also the creator of the Music Vigil, a
palliative care program for the dying. Melissa is on the faculty of
Binghamton University as a yoga instructor where she teaches Ashtanga
Yoga. She has public classes in yoga and meditation and does yoga
presentations and workshops for businesses and other organizations in
addition to private sessions for Yoga Therapy.
Lisa Craig Fenwick has an extensive music
background as a flautist. She has performed with the Elmira Symphony
(now Orchestra of the Finger Lakes) and local chamber music groups, has
done pick-up recording, and maintains an active private studio. Lisa has
a business called Kindermusik of Ithaca and is with the Community School
of Music and Arts in Ithaca where she as taught for 18 years. Lisa and
is now studying harp with Myra Kovary of Ithaca, New York.
Meredith Kohn Bocek, director, After 20 years
of performing as a free-lance pedal harpist, Meredith transitioned to
folk harp because of her love of the ringing timbre of these harps and
currently plays for many special occasions. Folk harps are smaller than
the pedal harp and are lighter strung. Their sound is every bit as
lovely as that of their larger relative. Meredith’s repertoire includes
Celtic, South American, Baroque, light classical and folk music as well
as contemporary ballads. She enjoys introducing the harp to audiences at
coffee houses and restaurants and often speaks about the history of the
harp and the pieces played. Playing the harp has been a lifelong
endeavor for Meredith and she is very excited to present to you Harps on
the Susquehanna!

well known jazz greats. Not only is he able to rock the “ivories” with
ragtime and jazz, he also can mesmerize with his rendition of popular
ballads.
Rick has performed at many of the local service clubs, playing on many
occasions for the Tioga County Council on the Arts at our Wednesday
evening concerts in Hickories Park during the summer. He also has
performed at the Guthrie Inn as a regular for Sunday brunches. Weddings,
parties, and night spots have been graced by this popular entertainer.

Al Hamme & Friends, jazz
musician
On Sunday,
April 23, local musician Al Hamme and a few of his friends will
present “Jazz For a Sunday Afternoon”. Al Hamme described this
performance as follows: “It is my intention to present jazz in
its various forms in a concert setting, but I will also include
some semi-classical compositions that use jazz influences. The
basic instrumentation will be Woodwinds, Bass, Piano and
Percussion, but I expect that we will also present this
instrumentation in different groupings (including perhaps
performances of solo, duo and trio combinations).”
“I'm also sure that some of the repertoire on this program will
be original compositions by members of the ensemble. The players
are myself, woodwinds; Bill Carter, piano; Andrew Williams,
string bass and trombone; and Joel Smales, percussion.”

Water
Bear

offers great classical music and entertainment through April. The
concerts are free to the public with donations welcome. On Sunday,
January 16th, the Always on Sunday series will present Water Bear. This
group is part classical, part jazz, and part folk; they’re in a class by
themselves, making music that’s as subtle as it is adventurous. An
original music group, Water Bear members include Mer Boel (violin and
voice), Ruth Roland (violin), Tim Reppert (bass), and, for this
performance, guest keyboardist Bill Cowdery. While the instrumentation
suggests a classical resonance, the group adds vocals, ethnic
influences, and improvisation in the mix, resulting in a refreshingly
eclectic sound.
